Labmeeting - web site to share research papers

August 9th, 2008

“A new Web site allows scientists to organize research papers online and share them with their colleagues, while doing some social networking on the side.”

Labmeeting the document management and networking site, which is free for individual scientists and students, allows researchers to upload PDF files of research papers and other documents, mark them, organize them, search them, recommend them to colleagues, and see what their peers are collecting. Each scientist has a profile page and can create groups, inviting the members of their labs to add their documents to a shared collection accessible from anywhere.”

Campus Open Access Policies: The Harvard Experience and How to Get There

August 9th, 2008

“This spring, Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted to enable open access to their scholarly articles in an institutional repository. This vote granted the university the rights necessary to archive and make freely available on the Internet articles written by Arts and Sciences faculty members. It is the first time the faculty of a U.S. university has voted for an open access directive and the first time a faculty has granted permission to the university to make its articles available through open access. It is because of this vote, and the efforts leading up to it, that the Harvard FAS was named as the SPARC Innovators for June 2008

OpenDOAR - Directory of Open Access Repositories

February 17th, 2008

OpenDOAR is an authoritative directory of academic open access repositories. Each OpenDOAR repository has been visited by project staff to check the information that is recorded here. This in-depth approach does not rely on automated analysis and gives a quality-controlled list of repositories.

As well as providing a simple repository list, OpenDOAR lets you search for repositories or search repository contents. Additionally, we provide tools and support to both repository administrators and service providers in sharing best practice and improving the quality of the repository infrastructure. Further explanation of these features is given in a project document Beyond the list.

Browse through Nanotechnology related papers archived: OpenDOAR Nanotechnology

Drexel’ E-Repository and Archives - iDEA is also indexed in the OpenDOAR Directory of Open Access Repositories.

Lund University: Journal Info

January 11th, 2008
Look up information on your favorite scientific journal or discover a new one. New site that provides Open Access information and options by journal title, see its OA policies, see competing OA titles. A good compliment to SHERPA (SHERPA rankings included).

New Science Editor Skeptical of Open Access Publishing

December 22nd, 2007

Excerpt:

“I think that the community should push for access to scientific information as quickly as possible. We tried [with the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences] to see how short we could make it. We actually tried only a 2-month delay. But the next year a number of librarians told us that they would wait the 2 months and not subscribe, saving the money for other journals. And so with regrets, our publication committee decided to let it slip to 6 months…. for scientists in the countries that can afford it–U.S. and Europe and Japan–we ask them to pay.”
